Mount Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8,481 meters. The Makalu Barun National Park and Wildlife Reserve has been created in order to protect the beauty of this land and the rich wildlife, bird life which are protected here. The Rai people live in the lower hills and practice ancestral worship and the Sherpa people live in the higher hills.
